AmericaShare works in Mukuru kwa Njenga, one of eight villages that make up the second-largest informal settlement in Nairobi, Kenya. The poverty experienced by Mukuru’s residents is extreme, with many families sharing a single toilet and many children sharing a single bed. The streets are lined with colorful storefronts and homes made from tin sheets. Mukuru lacks basic formal infrastructure, such as running water, electricity and sanitation.

AmericaShare has worked in Mukuru for over 30 years. During this time, the people there have helped push out safari vehicles from the muddy roads during the rainy season, cheerfully welcomed our guests, and invited us into their homes. We know a Mukuru that is resilient in the face of adversity and fiercely striving for a better future.
