About Us: Our History
AmericaShare and Micato Safaris
AmericaShare is the nonprofit arm of Micato Safaris, an award-winning tour operator focused on destinations in East Africa, Southern Africa and India. Micato has been a generous supporter of AmericaShare since our inception in 1986, and still covers 100% of our administrative costs so that all donor contributions go directly to our projects.
AmericaShare is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization—all donations are tax deductible.
How We Started
It all started with one little boy.
He was probably six years old, and was going from person to person in a Nairobi, Kenya shopping centre with a note from his school headmaster.
The note said that he was admitted to school, but needed to raise 700 shillings for a school uniform before he could come to class. It closed with a simple request:
The boy approached a Micato Safaris employee visiting from New York at that time. She read the note and handed him the final 600 shillings he needed—the equivalent of $15. Tears running down his face, the boy looked at her in grateful disbelief and said simply “God bless you” before dashing away.
And just like that, the idea that became AmericaShare was born.
Because there were countless other children like that boy in the Mukuru slum of Nairobi—for whom education was a precious gift beyond their reach. Because there were also women in the slum who were just trying to make a better life for their families. And because it became apparent that Micato Safaris was the perfect bridge between children and women in need and travellers wishing to make a meaningful difference in Africa.
So, AmericaShare was started in 1986. After over twenty years, we’ve seen enormous successes and many changed lives—and are more committed than ever to helping disadvantaged populations affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
